Board of Directors

OFFICERS:

JUD SCHOENDORF, M.D., MBA, CHAIR OF THE BOARD
Dr. Schoendorf is a practicing allergist in Long Beach.  He is very active in his community currently serving on the Long Beach Board of Health and Human Services,  Chair and Board Member, BREATHE California of Los Angeles County, a Trustee of BREATHE California, and a member of the Gang Violence Prevention Task Force (GRIP) representing the Board of Health and Human Services. He, also, has served in the recent past as a member of the Redevelopment Agency, City of Long Beach; as Chair for 4 years and Past Chair and on the board of the American Lung Association of Los Angeles County. Currently, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Long Beach Alliance for Children with Asthma. Dr. Schoendorf, as Co-Chair of the Professional Practices Workgroup has played a key role as a trainer of physicians in the area through the PACE Seminar (Physician Asthma Care Education).  He is, also, a past Board Member of Jewish Family and Children’s Services.

Dr. Schoendorf attended Tulane University, received his MD from Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans and did his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and residency in Pediatrics at LAC-USC Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Harbor General-UCLA Medical Center. He attended Pepperdine University where he received his MBA. Dr. Schoendorf recently retired as a Captain, United States Naval Reserve.

LAWRENCE M. LEBOWSKY, Esq., CHAIR-ELECT
Mr. Lebowsky is a lawyer who is certified by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization as a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trusts and Probate Law.  His practice focuses on estate and income tax planning, probate matters, conservatorships, estates and trusts, and nonprofit organization governance and taxation.  Mr. Lebowsky chaired the Board in the 1999-2000 Fiscal Year.  He currently serves as the Chair Elect, Chair of the Planned Giving Committee, and a member of the Executive Committee, the Bylaws & Nominating Committee, and the Audit Committee.

ROBERT L. DUITSMAN, Esq., VICE CHAIR
Mr. Duitsman is an Attorney at Law in private practice.  His area of expertise involves estate planning law.  He currently serves as Vice Chair of BLA, and serves as a member of the Executive Committee and the Bylaws & Nominating Committee.

FERNANDO DEL RIO, SECRETARY
Mr. Del Rio is President of Dome Enterprises, a community consulting firm specializing in corporate video productions and product marketing campaigns.  He was Vice President of KCAL-TV (Channel 9) from 1970 to 1990 where he produced and hosted their Daily TV news program and their public affairs talk shows.  He currently serves as the Secretary of the Board, serves as a member of the Executive Committee, Chairs the Development & Marketing Committee for the second consecutive year, and  a member of the Bylaws & Nominating Committee.

STEVEN L. BRYSON, Esq., TREASURER
An attorney in private practice, Mr. Bryson specializes in Bankruptcy Law.  He served as Chair of the Advocacy Committee in the 2011-2012 fiscal year.  In addition to his duties as Treasurer of the Board, he currently serves as Chair of the Audit Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee and the Advocacy Committee.

JOSEPH A. LEE, M.B.A., IMMEDIATE-PAST CHAIR OF THE BOARD

Mr. Lee brings a wealth of experience to the BREATHE LA Board from a successful career in business management.  His professional experience includes a role as Executive Director of Sales of Central Garden & Pet, a national distributor of garden and pet products.  As a volunteer since 1994, Mr. Lee served two consecutive terms as Chair of the Board.  He currently serves on the Executive Committee and the Development & Marketing Committee.

MEMBERS OF THE BOARD:

YOSSEF AELONY, M.D.
Dr. Aelony is a Pulmonologist and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Harbor-UCLA and is the Tuberculosis Clinician of the City of Long Beach.  He also served as Pulmonologist at Southern California Permanente as Medical Director of PFT Lab & Respiratory Therapy in Harbor City.  He currently serves as a member of BLA’s Bylaws & Nominating Committee and the Program & Research Committee.

MICHAEL ARLEN
A seasoned business leader and successful entrepreneur.  His professional expertise includes marketing, computers and computer graphics.

Mr. Arlen served on every officer capacity of this organization and also served as Chair of the Board during the 1988-89 and 1995-1996 Fiscal Years.  He currently serves as a member of the Development & Marketing Committee and on the Program & Research Committee.

ROBERT BERLINER, Esq.
Mr. Berliner’s law firm, Berliner & Associates, specializes in patents, trademarks and copyrights.  He is active in various community leadership organizations having served on a task force for the California Air Resources Board as well as the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD).  He also has technical expertise in organic and inorganic chemistry and petroleum chemistry.  He has been involved with BREATHE LA for nearly 40 years and served in every officer capacity.  He served as Chair of the Board in Fiscal Years 1983-1984, 1994-1995, and 1995-1996.  He currently serves as a Director at Large on the Executive Committee and is a member of the Bylaws & Nominating Committee.

CYNTHIA C. CARTER
Mrs. Carter’s involvement with BREATHE LA began in 2003 at the request of a friend who was a Board member.  She retired as a Senior Personnel Analyst in the Personnel Department at the City of Los Angeles.  She served as Treasurer of the Board in the 2010-2011 and as Secretary in the 2011-2012 Fiscal Years.  She currently serves as a Director at Large of the Executive Committee and is a member of the Audit Committee and Program & Research Committee.

ANDREA M. CASTER, Esq.
Mrs. Caster is an Attorney at Law in private practice.  She has a vast experience in teaching and working with special needs children and has a long history working with youth groups.  Her interests are in the areas of asthma programs and the needs of children with educational barriers.  In addition to serving on the Board, she currently serves as a member of the Program & Research Committee.

RAY GONZALES
Mr. Gonzales recently retired as the Community Affairs Director/Public Affairs Producer at KTLA-TV (Channel 5).  He has served as a volunteer for BREATHE LA for nearly 40 years and served as Chair of the Board during the 2006-2007 Fiscal Year.  He has participated as Master of Ceremonies at many of the organization’s Annual Meetings and Events.  Having served as Co-Chair of the Development & Marketing Committee last fiscal year, he currently serves as a member of the committee.

KEVIN P. HALL, Esq.
Mr. Hall, an Attorney, is a founding partner of the firm, Kull-Hall, LLP, specializing in business and commercial litigation.  He is a graduate of Columbia Law School where he was Executive Editor of the Columbia Journal of Environmental law.  He speaks Spanish fluently and has represented many indigent and other clients on a pro bono basis through public interest organizations.  Mr. Hall served as Chair of the Advocacy Committee during the 2009-2010 Fiscal Year and currently serves as a member of the committee.

EILEENA JAMES, M.B.A.
Ms. James recently retired after 28 years of service at Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company as Assistant Agency Director in Administration and Assistant General Agency Director.  Her volunteer contributions to BREATHE LA include serving as Chair of the Board during the 2009-2010 Fiscal Year and as Chair of the Development Committee.  She currently serves as a member of the Advocacy Committee.

STEPHEN MARINACCI
Mr. Marinacci is Vice President and Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Long Beach.  He brings to BREATHE LA his expertise in the areas of finance and investment.  Mr. Marinacci has actively participated in BLA’s Special Events, including the “Attire to Inspire” Fashion Show Event.  In addition to serving as a member of the Board, he currently serves on the Development & Marketing Committee.

JAMES M. OKAZAKI, P.E.
Mr. Okazaki is a Transportation Planning Consultant primarily to public agencies on transit, traffic and transportation issues and projects.  Before retiring from the City of Los Angeles, he served as Assistant General Manager for the Department of Transportation from 1998 through 2006.  He received his Masters in Engineering from the UCLA School of Engineering and received his Certificate in Business Management at the UCLA Anderson School of Business.  Mr. Okazaki currently serves on the Advocacy and on the Development & Marketing Committees.

EUGENE A. PORT, M.P.H.
Mr. Port is a retired Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Safety Engineer.  He has over 40 years of environmental experience working for government, industry, and as an owner of a consulting company.  He has served as a volunteer for over 40 years with the organization, served twice as Treasurer of the Board and as Chair of the Audit Committee.  He currently serves as a Director-at-Large on the Executive Committee and Chairs the Advocacy Committee.

GEOFFREY SEAMAN, M.B.A., J.D.
Mr. Seaman is Vice President and Senior Wealth Management Director of the Western Regional Offices of BNY/Mellon Financial Corporation.  He provides comprehensive advisory services regarding estate and gift tax planning, income tax planning, charitable gifting and assets protection.  He is a well seasoned volunteer serving on various Boards and chairing a number of leadership development committees in the Los Angeles area.  In addition to serving on the Board, he currently serves as a member of the Development & Marketing Committee.

TIMOTHY G. SELE
Mr. Sele is Site Director for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.  His duties include managing the site business operations and administration, managing the site leadership team priorities and initiatives, providing employee communications, and leading employee engagement and involvement.  With nearly 30 years of experience in commercial aircraft, he served a number of years as a Designated Engineering Representative for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).  In addition to his service on the Board of Directors, Mr. Sele currently serves on the Development & Marketing Committee.

GUY W. SOO HOO, M.D.
Dr. Soo Hoo is a Pulmonologist and serves as Director of Medical Intensive Care Unit at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hospital.  He also serves as Clinical Professor of Medicine at Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.  He first joined the Board of Directors of BREATHE LA in 1994 and served as Chair of the Board during the 1997-1998 and the 2004-2005 Fiscal Years.  He currently serves as Chair of the Program & Research Committee and as a member of the Bylaws & Nominating Committee.
