JOB TITLE:                     Health Educator

DEPARTMENT:             Programs

REPORTS TO:                Director of Programs and Advocacy

FLSA STATUS:               Part-time, non-exempt

General Statement of Duties

BREATHE LA is a nonprofit 501©3 organization dedicated to promoting lung health and clean air in Los Angeles County.  BREATHE LA addresses these issues through education, advocacy, research and technology with a focus on COPD, environmental education, lung disease, tobacco and access to health services.  Programs are multi-cultural, multi-disciplined and tailored to individuals and communities, age ranges and cultural backgrounds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates a well-informed understanding of the programs and services that BREATHE California of Los Angeles County (BREATHE LA) provides to the community
  • Adheres to BREATHE LA’s policies and procedures consistent with the mission, vision and value statements
  • Identify potential community partners
  • Develop and build effective working relationships with community-based groups, medical providers, and faith-based organizations
  • Conduct lung health education workshops and health risk assessments
  • Develop and disseminate relevant health communication material pertaining to lung health and environmental health
  • Administer pre/post-tests and data entry of health outcomes of program participants
  • Facilitate meetings with community partners to organize resources
  • Deliver presentations at community events and local health fairs
  • Utilize community partnerships to aid in recruitment of participants and fulfillment of program objectives

Qualifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • At least two years of work experience as a health educator, community health worker, or related experience required
  • Associate degree in Public Health, AA degree in Respiratory education, or related field strongly preferred
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Data entry experience using Excel
  • Experience preparing and delivering health education presentations using PowerPoint
  • Community organizing and related experience working with hard-to-reach populations
