Pre-Dawn Air Pollution Hot Spots Identified with New Study

Researchers pinpointed areas of pollution concetrations along the Santa Monica Freeway extending more than 1.5 miles north and south of the freeway. The study, published in the journal Atmospheric Environment, was written by lead author Dr. Shishan Hu, UCLA School of Public Health postdoctoral scholar and Environmental health researchers from UCLA, USC and the California Air Resources Board(CARB).
Weather conditions and geography, as well as seasonal windflow patterns create air pollution levels high enough to have measurable lung health impacts along the Santa Monica / 10 Freeway. Rates of asthma and other respiratory conditions have long been known to be higher in areas shrouded in air pollution and the study concluded that living conditions near freeways require extra vigilence. If you live along a freeway corridor, the researchers suggest you consider keeping windows closed at night and minimize outdoor exercise near major roadways in the hours before sunrise.
So, sleep in a bit and take that morning run after the sun is up.
