SB 375 Signed into Law
October 2008
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB 375 into law, an important element in the sight against climate pollution, the law will reduce vehicle pollution by improving transportation and land use planning.
The legislation by Sen. Darrell Steinberg, which was co-sponsored by Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV). " would reduce heat-trapping pollution from cars by providing incentives for cities to build more compact neighborhoods with more options for people to walk, bike and take public transportation instead of driving.
At the current rate and patterns of development, the total number of miles driven by Californians is projected to increase by 60 percent in the next 20 years according to Caltrans. Since cars and light trucks emit about 30 percent of California’s global warming pollution, getting a handle on their emissions is essential to reducing heat-trapping pollution to 1990 levels by 2020, as required by the Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32)."
