Summer Health Tips

As temperatures start to rise and we look to another very warm Los Angeles summer, I’m sure there are many different things that come to mind. Whether you look forward to days spent relaxing at the beach, swimming in the pool, playing at the park, or waiting for the fall breezes so you can see the hills again, the summer brings many changes to LA. Soaring temperatures can also make us more aware of health issues, ranging from asthma to heat stroke. Here are a few tips to keep you, your family and your environment healthy through the hot months:
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water: We hear this all the time but did you know that water can also help to control things like asthma and allergies? Water helps to keep the mucus in the lungs from becoming thick, one of the causes of acute asthma and allergy attacks. To help avoid these attacks, researchers recommend drinking at least one glass of water for every two hours you are awake.
Keep your environment clean: Minimize pollution levels in your home by using environmentally friendly cleaning products. Traditional cleaners are full of harsh chemicals that can pollute the air inside your home. Often these chemicals can trigger asthma. Using three basic products, white vinegar, baking soda, and water, you can clean virtually every surface of your home, save money, and create a more healthy environment for you, your family, and your pets! Maintain the green: Plants need extra attention in the summer months too, but studies show that the average household uses twice the amount of water than it actually needs to keep plants healthy. Keep in mind that evaporation levels are highest during the hottest parts of the day. That means the majority of water sprayed during the day evaporates into the atmosphere rather than being available to plants. Watering your plants in the early evening gives them time to absorb the water and prepares them for the next scorcher! Plants also help keep our air clean by absorbing particulate matter (pollution floating around in our air) and by producing oxygen for us to breathe. Keeping your plants healthy through the summer months will help keep you healthy as well!
Shed the fur: Pets shed more during warmer temperatures which can make life tricky for allergy sufferers. Keep your pets hydrated and make sure to brush them daily to minimize the amount of pet hair and dander in your environment. Bathing them once a week will also reduce the amount of dander in your home. Your pets will thank you for helping them stay cool and you’ll reduce your allergy triggers. The Furminator (http://www.furminator.com/) works wonders at getting that extra fur off your pet and into the trash can --instead of around your house.
