World pandemic declared

Not just any flu, swine flu poses dangerous pandemic threatNot just any flu, swine flu has moved beyond the discomfort of runny nose and aches and pains, into a worldwide deadly flu pandemic declared June 11, 2009

First reported in Mexico City, the highly contagious virus originated in pigs and 'jumped' to humans. Swine Flu is a new, highly dangerous and communicable strain of the virus that attacks the respiratory system and has spread rapidly with new cases reported in Mexico, US and Canada. To date, ten Californians have died of swine flu and reported cases have climbed across the globe. There is currently no swine flu vaccine available but you can protect yourself and others by being aware of basic control measures and symptoms. The symptoms of swine flu are similar to classic flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue.

You can reduce your risk of swine flu and the risk of infecting others:

These common sense measures can help prevent respiratory illnesses like influenza.

  • Cover the nose and mouth whenever one coughs or sneezes. Use a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Good hand washing with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Wash or use hand cleaners frequently.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people, especially if they are coughing or sneezing.
  • If you get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school to limit contact with others to keep from spreading the infection.
